Why Slave Lake?

So why was Slave Lake chosen as a reception centre for evacuees from High Level? Somebody asked us that question.

Probably because it’s the first town of any size on the evacuation route that’s capable of fulfilling such a role. The road to Peace River was cut off. Fort Vermilion must have taken a few evacuees. Some went to LaCrete. Others went north to Hay River. But according to the mayor of Slave Lake, the High Level mayor reached out quickly and asked; that set things in motion. The provincial emergency management folks were consulted, but it wasn’t their call.
