Tops in match play

Doug Kubel, left, is the winner of the inaugural match play golf competition at Gilwood in Slave Lake. He received his trophy and $1,000 winner’s cheque from co-organizer Boyd Kelham on the 18th green on Oct 5. Initiated by Charlie Reade, the competition ran the whole season, with 32 participants. What’s great about it, Kelham says, is that by using handicaps, it allows people of various skill levels to compete against each other, and the lesser-skilled ones are just as likely to win as the more skilled ones. Kubel says he has a nine handicap. Kelham says the goal for next season is to have “at least 64 players.”
