The Michener Minute……: A high-energy, fast-paced week

Roland Michener Secondary School had a fast-paced, high-energy week last week. Here’s what we accomplished:

Miss Keats and Mrs. Ries took several students to Edmonton last Friday and Saturday to attend a SAGA conference. The best part – they all had a blast! Worst part – Miss Keats got sick on the trip. Sorry to hear about your bad luck.

Sr. Boys Rams basketball team – They had their first game against St. Francis Falcons on November 26th. Stay tuned for a score and post-game analysis in the paper. They also have their first tournament of the year at E.W. Pratt High School in High Prairie this weekend. All the best to the Rams!

Sr. Girls basketball tryouts – take place this week! Stay tuned to find out who made the squad.

Jr. Boys’ basketball – RMSS is proud to announce our Jr. Boys team for this year. They are Porter Zutz, Korbin Gauthier, Inigo Estacio, Kris Parsons-Courtorielle, Marcus Fagan, Logan Sand, Jamie Gladu, Bahaa Ibdah, Ryden Fiddler, Noah Plouffe, Andre Joaquin and Jacob Geange.

They had their first game last Wednesday against the crosstown rivals from St. Francis. The Falcons were a team loaded with size and experience. They rolled over the Rams in a decisive 55 – 28 victory.

Good Luck to the Rams in the Smoky River Basketball League this winter! Thanks to Mr. Rowe and Mrs. Bradley for coaching this year!

Wrestling – Tryouts are ongoing in the Sr. high gym for both Jr. and Sr. high male and females. Bring gym clothes, water bottle and a great attitude. Tryouts go from 3:30 p.m. 6:00. p.m. We will submit the team roster when it is completed.

Student recognition – each week, dozens of students are nominated for this award around our building. They get nominated for kind deeds, great academic efforts and results, acts of citizenship and leadership. The list is read aloud throughout the school to recognize all nominees and then a random draw determines our weekly winner. Congratulations to last week’s winner, who was Raighn Hamelin!

Cardboard boat competition – Some of our Jr. High Science students travelled to Edmonton of November 20th for the Skills Canada Cardboard Boat Competition. Unfortunately, the grade 9’s boat sunk, as the captain put his foot through the bottom! The Grade 8’s did super. They finished 20th in the competition and had a great time taking part. Thanks to Miss Hollohan for taking them. She shared that many compliments were given to her and her students in regard to their boat designs and awesome behaviour.
