A handful of firsts and an armload of personal best times (PBs) came out of the Slave Lake Sharks’ latest foray into competitive swimming. This time it was on July 29 in Peace River at a meet hosted by the Porpoises club.
Individually, in alphabetical order: Grace Auger had three PBs, in the Girls 9 & 10 200m freestyle, 100 free and 25m breast stroke. Ethan Baril won three races – the Boys 11 & 12 100m butterfly, 100 back stroke and 100m free, setting PBs in two of those. He also won the silver aggregate medal for his age group.
Eleanor Friesen set two PBs – in Girls 11 & 12 100m individual medley and 400 free. Soleil Pugliese laid down a personal best time in the Girls 9 & 10 100m IM.
Moving right along, Dawson Taylor set PBs in two of his Boys 7 & 8 races – 50m breast and 100m IM. He also won three races and the gold aggregate in his age group! Gryffin Taylor earned bronze aggregate in the Boys 9 & 10 with his one first and three second-place finishes.
Ahlora Vekved had a PB in the Girls 9 & 10 50m free race. Finally, Emersen Vekved had PBs in the Girls 11 & 12 100m back (also placing second) and 100m IM.
In the relays, two wins for Slave Lake teams. The quartet of E. Baril, E. Friesen, G. Taylor and E. Vekved won the 12 & Under 200m IM. The same foursome won the 200m freestyle relay.
Taking the bronze in the Girls 200m free relay was the team of G. Auger, S. Pugliese, A. Vekved and S. Baril. The same group took fourth place in the 200m IM.
The regional championship meet is this coming weekend in Grande Prairie. Top finishers there will advance to the provincials in Edmonton Aug. 18 – 20.
