One dead, one arrested in May 17 incident in Slave Lake

The RCMP’s major crimes team is working on a probable case of murder in Slave Lake.

Some sort of altercation in the early hours of May 17 resulted in the death of one man. The crime scene was a driveway on 3rd St. SW. For most of that day the street was blocked off. People in the neighbourhood reported police with a large dog making the rounds later that same day.

As of Tuesday morning, one person had been arrested in the case, said Slave Lake RCMP Staff Sgt. John Spaans.

Rumours persisted into Tuesday that there were two people killed. Spaans said this likely arose from what looked like two body bags on the ground. One of them was being used to protect evidence from the rain, he said.

What exactly happened and who was involved police have not said. The major crimes unit is leading the investigation and further updates will come from them, possibly as early as this afternoon.
