Family members visited the Jean-Luc Deba memorial at Canyon Creek earlier this month. Deba, a helicopter pilot, lost his life while fighting wildfires in the area in May of 2011. Third from the right is his mother Paulette, who came from France, with her daughter Laurence and grandson Xavier (on the left). Behind Paulette Deba are Jean-Luc’s daughter Christelle Deba and her partner Sharne McGarvey, from New Zealand.
Christelle Deba has visited the site three times before; this was the first time for Paulette to visit the site where her son passed away. “My family and I really appreciated the warm welcome we have had, like always when coming to Slave Lake,” says Christelle. “My grandma has wished for years to visit the place where her son died.”
