Summer Games a soggy affair for local ball player

Kyle Campbell of Slave Lake took a break from Midget league ball to play for Zone 8 in the Alberta Summer Games. This was in Grande Prairie on the July 21 weekend, which happened to be record-setter for rainfall.

But somehow the tournament was completed. Zone 8 (northwestern Alberta) lost all three of its games. A fourth game wasn’t played due to the rain.

Campbell played shortshop for the team. He qualified from among 70 hopefuls at a camp in GP in early July. The tryouts involved fielding ground balls, batting practice and base-running.

Normally, Campbell is an underage Midget with the Heat, playing ‘AA’ ball. The team managed to go 2 – 1, and will play in the Tier II provincials in Lac La Biche on the August long weekend.

Campbell is also a hockey player, but says he likes baseball better. He plans to take this winter off hockey, going to baseball camps instead.

“Me and a couple of guys are thinking of playing ‘AAA’ in Grande Prairie (next year),” he says. “But it’s not decided yet.”
