After winning zones in Slave Lake, Roland Michener Secondary School golf team finished in the middle of the pack at provincials in Red Deer.
The team consists of Nick Carpenter, Ethan Syslak, Jacob Hartman, Parker Hay and Owen Pearson, alternate.
School provincials are part of the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association A.S.A.A.
The team competed in the 2019 A.S.A.A. 1A/2A High School Provincial Golf Championships on September 23 and 24th. It was held at the Alberta Springs Golf Course, near Red Deer, and the Innisfail golf course.
“The team knew that a medal was not out of reach, but they also knew they would have to be at the top of their games in order to capture one of the three top podium positions,” says coach Brian Hay in an email report.
“A disappointing first day, found them 13 strokes out of third place and medal contention,” says Hay.
“The greens at Innisfail are beasts,” says Hay, “and crippled our squad with many three and a few four putts on the scorecards at day’s end.”
“The boys narrowed the gap on day two, posting the third best day results in our category,” Hay says. “Although this tightened up the race, it was not enough to leap-frog over any other teams.”
Roland Michener placed sixth out of 11 teams.
“The bronze medal was missed by only nine strokes, the silver by only 13,” says Hay. “This is a very small margin considering it is a four-man-team, two-day, stroke event.”
Coach Hay is “very proud of these five young men and would like to thank them for their hard work, diligent efforts and awesome behaviour while representing our school and community and for doing our school proud at this year’s provincial competition.”
