Slave Lake’s summer swim club continues to compete in meets all over the northwestern part of the province. A bigger contingent than usual made the trip to Grande Prairie on June 22 for the meet there. Thirty-one Sharks competed, winning several events and setting personal best times in many others.

As usual, we’ll mention only the first-place finishes here; for all the rest, the website assa.ca does a good job of presenting full results.

Ethan Baril won three of his four races in the boys’ 13&14 age group – all three of them freestyle. Eleanor Friesen, swimming against girls in the same age group, did one better, winning four times. One was freestyle, one backstroke, one butterfly and one a medley.

Taylor Friesen (Girls’ 17&Under) won the 1,500-metre freestyle.

Senior man on the circuit Darcy Garratt won two races – the 400 Free and 1,500 Free.

Next up on the high step of the podium was Gryffin Taylor, who won the Boys’ 11&12 100 Fly, 100 Breast and 200 IM.

Benjamin Vizcarra was a winner in the Boys’ 6&U Flutterboard race. His sister Mia Vizcarra prevailed in the Girls’ 7&U 25m and 50m Breaststroke races.

Moving on to the relays, Slave Lake teams won three races. In the Mixed 17&U 200m Freestyle Relay, the foursome of Eleanor Friesen, Taylor Friesen, Cooper Pukanich and Ethan Baril were winners. So were Dawson Taylor, Darcy Garratt, Gryffin Taylor and Ayden Comeau in the Boys Open 200m Medley.

Finally, the same group won the Boys’ Open 200m Freestyle relay.

The next meet on the schedule is in Valleyview, on July 6.
