The fourth annual Slave Lake adult soccer tournament was held on the Jan. 25 weekend, in aid of Slave Lake KidSport. The following write-up was submitted by chief tournament organizer Esther Bylsma.
The winning ladies team was Aureus Roils from Grande Prairie. On the ladies side we had four teams competing. The games were all really close with each team getting either a win or a tie. Thrills FC women (from Three Hills) went undefeated during regular game play, and had a clear run to the gold medal match, but just couldn’t hold onto that undefeated streak and lost 5-2 against Aureus Roils.
The other two women’s teams were Millar (from Saskatchewan) and the Tornadoes from Grande Prairie.
The men’s side had five teams: Rugrats (Slave Lake), The Real MFs (Slave Lake), Millar (Saskatchewan) and LaCrete FC. For the past two years La Crete FC has come in and dominated, but this year was a little different. The scores were a lot closer (in most games) and it was fun to watch the teams compete.
The Real MFs took an early lead in the men’s side and beat LaCrete FC in regular play. This was LaCrete’s first loss in 20(ish) games. All of the men’s teams had at least a win or a tie to end the weekend, but the final match was the best by far to watch. LaCrete FC vs Real MFs. The score went back and forth and even stayed tied for a while. LaCrete were on a mission not to lose a second game, though, and they come out with the win 5-4.
A huge thank you goes out to the Slave Lake Inn & Conference Centre for its support every year. Also thank you to the teams for coming and playing, to the refs for traveling and to all the businesses that donated for our silent auction. A huge thanks to Garry Roth and the MRC staff from the town.
