What goes best with summer (aside from crisp lemonade and blue skies)? Fireworks, of course! Luckily for Slave Lake and area, there is now a store that specializes in fireworks right in town. It’s called Uncle John’s Fireworks. Your Leader reporter chatted with manager Keegan Jorquera to see how business has been so far.
“It’s been going good!” says Jorquera. “Right now it’s been a lot of small purchases for families going camping, but we did just have a customer come from Kinuso and contract us for a show.”
Jorquera says though the store recently just opened its doors, the decision to do it was made in January.
“We’re a company out of Edmonton – I’ve been buying from them for years!” he says. “The owner was opening one in Grande Prairie and Slave Lake; he’s been fishing here for years so he likes and knows the area. When I applied for a job at the Edmonton store and he asked me where I was living (Slave Lake) he wanted to know about the firework market and I told him there wasn’t much of one and not really anywhere to buy them.”
Jorquera adds, “About a week later I received a call and was asked to move back to Slave Lake and help set up a store. We officially opened on June 6th after we received approval by the fire department and the Explosives Regulatory Division (ERD).”
Uncle John’s is open year-round and sells an array of specialty fireworks which are all ‘consumer’ certified.
“We only have consumer fireworks for sale, but we can be hired to put on display firework shows – I’m certified to do that,” says Jorquera. “We don’t usually make a whole lot of profit in the winter but that’s usually when we do the most shows for weddings and events like that.”
Typical rules apply Jorquera says customers have to be 18-years-old and up to purchase any of the products.
“Luckily in this county (municipal district) we can provide you with the fire permit for free whereas other ones you have to pay $60 for it,” he says.
Uncle John’s is located on Main Street right beside Pizza Hut and is open Tuesday-Thursday 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., Fridays 11:00 a.m. – 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
