Minor baseball starts this week (weather permitting)

It seemed a bit strange last week to be talking about baseball with four inches of fresh snow on the ground. But it has to be done, and we came up with the following information, courtesy of Kevin Campbell:

“Our season will hopefully start next week with all teams taking to the field. We have approx. 190 kids registered this year. We have two T Ball teams, three Jr. Rookie teams, three Rookie teams, three Mosquito teams (1 Provincial and 2 Pembina), two Pee Wee teams, one Bantam team, one Midget team and two all-girls teams.”

That one Midget boys’ team will have to get by without the help of Matthew LaFrance and William Chemago. Those two will be playing for a Grande Prairie AAA team in the Norwest League this season. The team is called the Northern Lights.

“This will be a great experience for them both,” says Campbell.

Back here at home, Pembina League Mosquito and Pee Wee teams were scheduled to begin play this week. The Midgets are due to play in Edmonton this weekend.

Nine-year-old Lucas Diaz works out on the artificial pitchers’ mound while other kids wait their turn during an indoor training session for minor baseball at the field house in Slave Lake last week.
