To the Editor:
Arnold Viersen, MP for Peace River–Westlock, is troubled that the Trudeau Government continues to drag its feet on the expansion project it approved in November 2016:
As the Member of Parliament for a riding heavily dependent on the oil and gas industry, the approach taken by the Trudeau Liberals concerning the Trans Mountain Pipeline is only setting it up to fail.
All the previous owner of the pipeline ever asked for was certainty to proceed with what had already been approved by the Trudeau Liberals.
Instead, the government purchased the entire project using taxpayers’ money and pulled billions of dollars of investment out of the Canadian energy sector.
Let’s not forget how we got here. Justin Trudeau blocked the Northern Gateway pipeline project, killed the Energy East project, forcing an arbitrary tanker ban on the northern west coast, and introduced new legislation placing even more roadblocks in place for future projects. Over $120 billion of investment has fled Canada and is now creating jobs elsewhere.
Are we to believe that the Liberals really want the expansion project to proceed?
Canada’s Conservatives understand that by setting the conditions for success, lowing taxes and eliminating redundant regulations, projects like Trans Mountain could have been built without being a burden to the taxpayer.
We will continue to stand up for Canada’s natural resource sector, and most importantly, for the men and women whose livelihoods depend on it.
You can count on us to give you a voice against a Prime Minister determined to phase out your jobs.
