(It could still change)
The Slave Lake Icedogs expect four goalies in their training camp, which should be starting pretty soon. That’s along with seven defencemen and 14 forwards. Likely those numbers will be trimmed down a bit before the regular season begins in early October. Other names could be added as well.
Each group has at least one familiar face. Among the goalies it’s Colby Meguinis. He saw very little game action last season, but was always there if he was needed. Danil Babchuk and Tarynce Ducharme are the returnees on the blueline. Among forwards, Ilias Okemow and Nigel Cardinal, who have played together since they were Bantams, are back, along with Dominic Beaver, Gerik Giroux and Travis Kriewaldt.
General Manager Lauren Barr says she would like to have some of last year’s local Midgets (U18) try out for the team, but none have shown interest. The ‘pay-to-play’ format may be a discouraging factor.
One of the new players is Bryce Young of The Pas, Manitoba. He played last season for the Steinbach Pistons of the MJHL.
Like several other recruits to the Icedogs, Young is overage; thanks to the rules being different in the GMHL, there’s room for overage players and the ‘Dogs have scooped up a bunch of them – many from the Red Lake Miners in northwestern Ontario.
“I know all those guys,” says Young. He knows them because he played for the Miners in the 2018/19 season, leading the team in scoring with 101 points in 52 games. Last year’s output was more modest but still good: 12 goals and 34 assists for 46 points in 40 games for the Pistons. Their season came to a sudden halt in the first round of the playoffs, due to COVID.
“I’m excited to get back to it,” says Young.
