Ruthie Jo’s has been attending the Downtown Fridays Farmers Market in Slave Lake since it started this summer.

Owner Ruth Penner says she started out sewing a variety of items to sell at farmers market, such as doll clothes, bags, baby items, and some odd and ends, but wanted to find a product people really wanted.
“Within one summer I’d gone totally into selling just doll clothes and a few months later I added dolls and many other accessories.”

Penner says her goal was to sew and make items that are will last a long time.

Penner has enjoyed dolls for as long as she can remember.

As a youth she redid soft-bodied dolls. She reminisces about making many doll clothes from her mom’s scraps and a needle and thread since she was around six years old.

When Penner was 11 or 12 she says she was able to use the sewing machine and has been sewing ever since. As for selling doll clothes that’s been going full swing for almost two years.

“I love sewing up an outfit and then later seeing a child’s eyes light up when they see it.”

She states both the sewing and meeting the children are a great pleasure to her.

Penner is follower of Christ and a stay-at-home mom who has been living in Slave Lake for almost 12 years, with her husband and six children. She say the girls all love sewing and are helping where they can.

In the spring of 2018, Penner opened an Etsy shop to branch out to the online market.

Penner says she’s not a competitor, as she has her own style as do many other businesses.

Penner wants people to know she does not make the dolls but rather restores them.

She buys them used and then cleans them up the best she can and fixes what’s needed if possible.

Penner refurbishes brands, such as My Life, Journey Girls, Our Generation, Newberry, Maplea, Madame Alexander and a few others.
