Good experience for Atom teams in home ice tournament

The Nov. 17 weekend was another big hockey tournament weekend in Slave Lake, with eight Atom teams going at it in two divisions. The Atom 2 Thunder made it to the gold medal game in their division, losing 7 – 1 to the LaCrete Lumberjacks. The Atom 1 Thunder played Fairview for the bronze in their division, winning 9 – 1.

That bronze victory was the first win of the tournament for the Thunder 1 squad. Coach Sheldon Ghostkeeper says all three round robin losses were close.

“We lost 6 – 5 to Fairview, 10 – 8 to New Sarepta and 4 – 3 to Stony Plain, which counted as a league game.”

Ghostkeeper goes on to say that the kids worked hard and had fun.

“A few defensive lapses cost us a couple of games, but that is something we can work on in practice. It was nice to play teams that are in the same tier as us.”

On the ‘B’ side, the Thunder’s only loss was in the final. They’d beaten LaCrete 3 – 2 in the round robin, but according to assistant coach Chris Taylor, they “got to the end of their energy.”

On the whole, though, it was a good tournament and a great experience for the kids Taylor says.
