A former Slave Lake RCMP officer has been charged with assault, following an investigation by the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT).
The incident in question happened in Slave Lake in September of 2017. Const. Licio Soares had initially charged a man in custody with assaulting a peace officer. When the case came to court that December, other factors came to light which resulted in the matter taking a turn.
According to a release last week from the RCMP, the judge stayed the charges against the unnamed man, after his lawyer “brought forward concerns about the amount of force used during the original arrest and booking.”
The ASIRT investigation resulted in the charge against Soares, who is now in the ‘federal policing’ section of the RCMP’s ‘K’ Division. There is no change to his duty status while he awaits resolution of the matter. Soares has been with the force for seven years.
