Floating fun, prizes and free food on the river

The River Parade event on Aug. 26 brought out a flotilla of floating craft – some dressed up in a competition for prizes – to the Lesser Slave River near Slave Lake. The event was put on to celebrate the completion of ‘The Great Trail,’ (also known as the Trans Canada Trail) this year. The river has been designated a ‘blueway’ section of the trail – hence the decision to hold the celebration on the water. Putting it on were the Town of Slave Lake, M.D. of Lesser Slave River and the Woods & Water Recreational Trails Association, with financial help from the Trans Canada Trail organization.

Deb Strickland, left and Carly Dick were winners of the kayak and paddle board prizes.

Last, but by no means least – the Winarski craft shows up at the finish area, all decked out with balloons and M.D. of LSR regalia.

Julie Vance and her doggie seem to be enjoying themselves safely on the water.
