Depending on how you look at it, basketball ended on a high note for St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Academy this year. There was a zone championship victory for the junior boys and three separate zone championship tournaments hosted here on two weekends this month.
Last weekend saw the zone tournament for senior boys and girls – held at St. Francis and St. Mary of the Lake. Unlike their junior counterparts the seniors didn’t fare that well, but a good job was done and (we assume) a good time was had by all.
The boys finished sixth overall and the girls finished eighth in their respective tournaments.
“Overall the weekend was a great success and the teams were happy with their experience both with the town and the schools but also with the officiating,” says St. Francis Athletic Director Joe Kirby. “These are all positives. We had one somewhat severe injury in the first game of the boys draw on Friday afternoon but otherwise, the weekend was injury free as well. With 24 games over 36 hours that is always welcome news.”
On the boys’ side, Breton High School came out on top, beating the Holy Trinity Academy of Drayton Valley, which got the silver. The final was 83 – 50.
On the girls’ side, Grand Trunk High School of Evansburg defeated the Thorsby High School Sabres in the final by a score of 68 – 47.
The winners go on to 1A provincials in Stirling and Paradise valley, respectively.
