Lana Daniels is the billet coordinator for the Slave Lake Icedogs junior ‘A’ hockey team. She’s looking for families to house one to two male players for the coming school year/hockey season.
A meeting for that purpose was held last Thursday night. There may be others, but Daniels was hoping for a good turnout; also hoping a note on the sports pages of The Leader might spark some response.
“I’m trying to send it (the information) out to some new places,” she says.
There are (or will be) 20 players needing billets, aged between 17 and 20. Daniels says they are dedicated kids who are paying to play hockey in Slave Lake while going to high school. Billet families are expected to treat the youth like one of the family.
Billet families receive a monthly allowance to feed the players and one complementary Icedogs’ season pass to the home games.
Billets in Slave Lake would be most convenient, but Daniels says Wagner, Widewater and Canyon Creek would be fine as well.
“Some of the boys will have cars,” she says, “and they’ll be giving rides to the ones that don’t.”
The players will be expected to do volunteer work in the community.
Most billets start at the end of August, but a few Ukrainian players arrive August 14. Speaking Ukrainian is a bonus, but not required. Those interested can contact Daniels at 780-849-1292.
