Big changes are coming for the Slave Lake Boys and Girls Club

Callie Hermanson
Lakeside Leader

After several months of a competitive hiring process, the Slave Lake Boys and Girls Club has a new Executive Director.

Slave Lake community member Cindy Williams is the new Executive Director.

Williams’ first day of work with the organization was October 10, 2018, and her first few weeks will consist of orientation, observing programs and getting to know the organization, staff, volunteers, children, youth and families.

Williams will be scheduling visits and meetings with community partners, members and staff to familiarize herself with other programs in Slave Lake.

Williams says right now the club has 17 kids involved and are looking to get more kids involved in the club by talking and promoting what the club does. She says what the club wants to achieve is for kids to experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and build confidence and skills.

Williams explains the club wants to also make sure everyone working with the club is properly trained and has the right certifications.

The club has also recently hired Angela Tallman as the programmer for the club, Tallman has her level three early childhood development certification.

Williams explains she works directly with the kids.
“She is amazing,” says Williams.

Tallman will be running programs such as the Kids in the Kitchen cooking program where she gets kids involved in cooking healthy snacks based on the Canadian Food Guide.

Williams says some of the things the club is looking forward to doing is creating some more after-school programs such as an after-school reading program or maybe tutoring sessions for the young kids.

“We want to work with and partner with the community so that we can really help our youth in the area grow to their full potential.”

Williams says the reason the club did not have a director was the board ran the club until it became too much to do on their own.

“So I knew it was going to be a little chaotic when I came in but I’m excited and up for the challenge.”

Williams has 11 years of marketing experience and says she know a lot when it comes to sponsoring and creating programs.

Right now the club is looking for volunteers to help run a casino night in Grande Prairie to help raise money for the club on October 30 and 31. All expenses paid. If anyone is interested in volunteering they can contact Williams at 780-805-2439.

The club runs out of St. Mary of the Lake Elementary School and is open Monday to Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The club is opn on P.D. days Cost for the club is $120 per month.
