Bear visits downtown, smashes window

Leader staff

As bear stories go, this one might be a first for Slave Lake. Managers of two downtown businesses were quite alarmed to find a big hole in a glass window of a vacant space next to The Brick on Thursday morning.

Bruce Allarie of The Brick says he was also baffled as to why the police hadn’t called, because they’d obviously been there already.

It turned out the culprit was a bear that had run into the window sometime in the early hours – perhaps fooled by the reflection in the same way birds are.

Left behind for evidence was a tuft of what looks very much like black bear fur.

The telltale tuft

This bit of bear hair was left behind when a bear apparently ran into a storefront window between The Brick and Nicolet Insurance in downtown Slave Lake on Sept. 20.

The scene on Thursday morning: no entry, nothing stolen and a bit of black fur under one of the pieces of glass.
