Submitted

On December 21, 2019 shortly after midnight, two Athabasca RCMP members were on patrol on the Jean Baptiste Gambler No. 183 reserve near Calling Lake, Alberta.

Police spotted a male and female walking on Park Drive. Both parties were known to be wanted on outstanding warrants.

Police stopped the car and advised the suspects that they were under arrest. The suspects fled across the roadway. Police pursued the male on foot towards the tree line.

As police closed the distance to tackle the suspect, the male suspect turned and swung a machete at the police officer. The officer was able to avoid getting struck by the machete, and pushed the suspect to the ground. The other officer followed the suspect to the ground, and a fight ensued. The officer successfully removed the machete from the hands of the suspect before effecting the arrest without further incident.

The 28-year-old from Calling Lake, Alta. was taken before a justice of the peace and charged with the following offenses: Assault of a Police Officer, and two counts of Fail to Comply with Probation Order, Possess break-in tools and Resist/Obstruct Police Officer.

The male was released from custody on conditions to appear in Athabasca Provincial Court on January 13, 2020 at 10:00 a.m.
