Leader staff

RCMP in Athabasca is looking for help in solving a Boxing Day shooting in Calling Lake.

According to a release from Const. S.D. Bereza, a report came in on Dec. 26 that a man had suffered a gunshot wound to the leg. This happened at about 8:00 p.m., on the Jean Baptiste Gambler First Nation. The victim had gone to a nearby residence to call for help.

When emergency services arrived they found the 30-year-old man conscious and in stable condition. He was taken to hospital in Athabasca, initially, then transferred to Edmonton. He was expected to have surgery there.

What the victim apparently did not do was identify his assailant. In his release, Bereza said RCMP had at the time “no suspects or witnesses,” and are asking for assistance from the public.
