How things used to be: photos from the Barton archive

Dennis Barton of Slave Lake dug up an envelope of historical photos recently, most of them from the Wabasca area. He hopes to donate them to the new museum in Wabasca. Below is a sample of what he has.

This one is undated; nor does it say where it was taken, but it speaks pretty well for itself.

St. Martin’s mission school in Desmarais, and associated buildings. Information on the back of the photo says the building was being prepped for demolition.

This was how the mail got around to isolated communities in winter: Photo was taken in 1935.

The road from Slave Lake to Wabasca up to 1960 was nothing to write home about – then again, maybe it was!
