Slave Lake received a fresh new take to ‘on the go’ with the recent opening of ‘Second Helping: Good Food For People On The Go’ on Wednesday, June 20.

Owner Allyson Goyette says she came up with the idea for Second Helping after juggling a family and career for 30 years.

Goyette says everyone knows the importance of healthy eating, but it takes time to prepare meals. She explains that she wants to help the busy people of Slave Lake and surrounding area by doing the preparation for them.

Goyette creates everything from scratch in the Second Helping kitchen.

“We grow as much food as we can, and if we can’t produce it ourselves, we look for local or sustainable sources in our community.”

All food is either fully cooked and only requires thawing and reheating, or simple baking in the oven or slow cooker.

Second Helping also has a few options, such as stir fry meat packs, veggie packs, and sauces that you can mix and match and prepare at home.

Goyette mentions that the menu will change frequently, because people do not want to eat the same meals over and over again. When working with local growers they have to use what is in season.

Second Helping as well does canning and dehydrating to sell. The store also creates snacks and specialty teas, herb, vinegar and spice rubs to help people add more flavour to their dinners.

“Be sure to check our Facebook page for weekly specials,” Goyette says.

Goyette says at Second Helping they grind their own whole wheat flour, sourced from local farmers, to use in many of their products.

“Every natural ingredient in our food is a name you would recognize and pronounce.”

Goyette says she works hard to eliminate the risk of cross contamination in all products and uses nuts, wheat, and eggs in her kitchen.

If you have a severe allergy to any food product, let her know and she will customize your order to avoid risks. All meals are tailored to suit different families’ tastes or special diets.

The store is open Wednesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Friday 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

Goyette says when ordering online, customers will receive an estimated time for pickup. They can even pay in advance so they can pick up their meals while on the go.

Delivery is available on Wednesdays and Thursdays after 6:00 p.m. between Slave Lake and Kinuso for a small fee.

Second Helping is located at 105 6 Ave SE in Slave Lake (beside Jax N Monicas Boutique.)
