Game changer

Russell Baxter, right, is the first winner of the Game Changer Award. He’s a minor hockey coach in Slave Lake. Presenting the award at the April 30 Slave Lake Minor Hockey Association’s annual general meeting are Calvin Beauchamp, centre, and Grady Beauchamp. The award is sponsored by the Beauchamp family, in memory of Terry Beauchamp, who gave a lot of time and energy to the game of hockey in Slave Lake over many years. The write-up on this year’s winner said Baxter was chosen out of a pool of 12 nominees. He is described as “open-minded, committed, supportive, patient, passionate,” and “made each kid feel special.” Baxter received a small plaque; a larger one will go in the trophy case at the MRC. He also received a $100 gift certificate from Boston Pizza.
Calvin says the idea for the award came about in conversations in the family, sparked by the fact Terry had received a similar award for coaching back in the early 1990s.
