Emergency services team up to send a holiday message

The big traffic diversion through the Sawridge Plaza Mall parking lot on Dec. 15 was the annual ‘Candy Cane Checkstop,’ put on by various agencies with an interest in safety and the law. Each vehicle was stopped and a person in uniform delivered a message and a candy cane to the driver. Says Town of Slave Lake peace officer Mark Becker, the idea was, “to education motorists and the public about the dangers of drinking and driving.” Participating in the checkstop this year were RCMP, Fish & Wildlife, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement, town and M.D., Emergency Medical Services, Victim Services, and let’s not forget about the fire department. Becker says he has no idea how many vehicles were stopped, but it must have been a lot.
