Attempted robber misses target; holds up constituency office instead

What was apparently an attempt to rob the cheque-cashing store in the Plaza 2000 in Slave Lake on June 27 ended up getting the robber nothing and shaking up the MLA’s constituency office assistant.

The assistant, who asked not to be named, was just entering through the rear of Danielle Larivee’s office shortly after 8:00 a.m. According to Plaza 2000 owner Ali Mouallem, a man approached, asking her to wait because he wanted to ask her a question. She did, and the next thing she knew he was escorting her inside and telling her it was a hold-up.

“Show me the safe,” he told her.

“We don’t have a safe,” she said.

When he realized this wasn’t the next-door cheque-cashing store, the man – whose face was mostly covered – left through the back door, disappearing into the southwest part of town. Larivee’s assistant called the police and they taped off the back of the office and went off looking for the suspect. They employed a dog in the search, but later in the day Staff Sgt. John Spaans told The Leader they hadn’t found anyone.

“The investigation is still fairly preliminary,” he said, “but hopefully we’ll have more information shortly (ie: description, possible image, etc).”
