Slave Lake’s Atom 2 Thunder hockey team is quietly making a bit of a name for itself in the Tier 5 ranks of the Alberta Interlock Hockey League. Outside of the league too, as it happens.
For example, on the last weekend of January the team took part in a tournament in Evansburg, beating every team but one they played against. That was a Calgary team, which beat the Thunder twice, including in the final. Other than that, they defeated Edmonton 7 – 1, St. Albert 6 – 2, Drayton Valley 7 – 3 and Hinton 3 – 2.
“Overall it was a great weekend and a fantastic tournament,” says Trisha Green, the team manager, who provided us with the information.
Meanwhile, the team is in a battle for top spot in their Tier 5 division in league play. After shutting out Barrhead 5 – 0 on Feb. 3, their record was eight wins, two losses and two ties. That put them two points back of both Westlock and Lamont for first place.
